Get to know: Schalk Liebenberg

With deep roots in mining and a drive to innovate, Schalk Liebenberg transitioned into a new role at Epiroc when MineRP became part of the company. Now working as a Business Development Engineer at the South African Customer Center, Schalk helps customers understand and apply digital tools like Epiroc Mining Intelligence (EMI), MineRP, and MyEpiroc to improve efficiency and safety in their operations.

Coming from a mining family, Schalk is passionate about contributing to the industry’s long-term sustainability. His move from a software background into a customer-facing role at Epiroc was a natural step—one that combined his technical expertise with a people-focused mindset.

Schalk describes his work environment as energetic and dynamic—like being part of a startup, but with the stability and experience of a global leader in mining. A typical day includes customer engagements, product discussions, and internal meetings that align teams across departments.

 

A key milestone in his journey was gaining the confidence to present Epiroc’s digital solutions to customers. Thanks to the mentorship of colleagues from around the organization, including Sales Support and Digital Solutions leaders, Schalk was able to quickly get up to speed and fully integrate into his new role.

 

He’s especially proud of how well digital solutions are now being implemented across South African mining sites, driving both productivity and safety.

What keeps Schalk motivated is the people around him—the open, collaborative culture and the willingness of colleagues to share knowledge and help each other succeed. His advice to newcomers is simple: be proactive, ask questions, and immerse yourself in the broader Epiroc ecosystem.

 

Outside of work, Schalk is energized by the outdoors—whether it’s hiking or simply being in nature. His bookshelf and playlist are equally eclectic, from deep history lectures to upbeat classics like Walking on Sunshine.
