STRACON at the forefront of mechanized ground support

December 9, 2024

STRACON is a leading provider of mining and construction services with more than 20 years of experience in the Americas, providing integrated services that span the entire life cycle of a mine. It has also provided construction and development services for various mining projects in Colombia for more than seven years. Having acquired the Boltec 235 rock reinforcement rigs, the company has been carrying out bolting operations three times faster and in a safer way for operators.

Years ago, STRACON performed ground support work using pneumatic hand tools such as jacklegs and stopers, which became a priority safety concern. This issue was resolved with the two Boltec 235 units from Epiroc.

The Boltec 235 is a fully mechanized rig that performs drilling, resin injection, and bolting from 1.5 to 2.4 meters and at roof heights up to 8.5 meters.

The rig enables the installation of different types of bolts, such as split set, helical and Swellex. Thanks to its incorporated electro-hydraulic Direct Control System (DCS), operators can issue the necessary commands to the machine from the operator platform without compromising their safety.

"We have improved the operational readiness of the project with Boltec 235 equipment, and we have also reinforced safety, as the equipment - which is much more comfortable and does not overheat - prevents impact on the operators. As a result, we have achieved 100% improvement in operation and occupational health and safety."

Productivity was another important factor. For example, in one of the projects, to complete the drilling, bolting and meshing process on a 3.5 x 3.5 meter face, approximately four to five hours a day was spent, depending on the section to be worked on, and at least three people were needed to carry out this work. This process was reduced to a third of the time with the Boltec 235 and is completely safe.

"We implemented mechanized ground support without exposing anyone to danger. The activity is performed much faster, as the machine can load the mesh, position the bolt, inject the resin, mix, and secure that all ground support in place is following the standard."

Max Cruz, STRACON Project Manager.

In addition to the Boltec fleet, STRACON has various Epiroc equipment, such as underground drill rigs, and low-profile underground loaders and mine trucks. These are supported by Epiroc, which provides on-site maintenance, supply of spare parts, and consignment drilling tools, as well as sharpening, marking, and recovery services for drill bits.

As part of its quest for productivity, STRACON is also testing the new Online Contract Reporting (OCR) software, an Epiroc system that enables traceability and control of the steel’s service life.

"This software is one of the best alternatives, as the drilling data is filled in and that information reaches our computers promptly. In terms of steel costs, we have done very well, and the steel is doing well, as we have indicators where we can see that the service life is prolonging."

Lido Abniel Claudio Silva, Equipment Trainer at STRACON

STRACON, with its new Boltec fleet, is a pioneer in Colombia in providing world-class mechanized ground support.
