Epiroc Digital Solutions strengthens partnership with Battery Electric

19 avril 2024

Stockholm, Sweden: Epiroc, a leading productivity and sustainability partner for the mining and infrastructure industries, has announced a deepened relationship with Battery Electric (Pty) Ltd, their distributor and close partner in South Africa. With Battery Electric’s recent order, the two companies will continue to enhance safety for underground locomotives in the mining industry.

Epiroc has announced their largest single order to date for the company’s Digital Solutions division in South Africa. The order comes from distributor and close partner, Battery Electric (Pty) Ltd, a company focused on the design and development of microprocessor-controlled underground mine locomotive control systems for battery, overhead trolley line, and hydrogen fuel cell-powered systems.

Epiroc’s cutting-edge MaxusX safety management system plays a pivotal role in the venture with Battery Electric. Developed specifically for mining applications, MaxusX supplies all the functions needed to safely operate underground locomotives.

The MaxusX management system provides proximity detection technologies and collision avoidance systems that detect, warn and stop the machine if the operator does not react to these warnings.

Battery Electric has held a long partnership with Mernok Elektronik, the company that developed the MaxusX management system. Since Epiroc’s acquisition of Mernok Elektronik in 2023, the relationship with Battery Electric has been maintained, and it looks to remain strong into the future.

"I would like to thank Battery Electric for their unwavering support. I am confident that together, we will achieve even greater success in the years ahead."

Schalk Janse Van Rensburg, GM Mernok Elektronik

Mernok Elektronik now operates as part of Epiroc Digital Solutions. This division provides a dynamic range of technology-agnostic digital solutions that improve safety, productivity, and sustainability in mining and construction. Collision avoidance is a critical aspect in that mission, and Mernok’s advanced solutions complement Epiroc’s growing equipment and automation offering.

“We take pride in offering what I believe to be the most advanced safety management system for underground rail-bound equipment," says Schalk Janse van Rensburg. "Supporting nearly 1,000 locomotives in operation today, our system and our partnership with Battery Electric, have demonstrated their efficacy.”

With this order, Epiroc and Battery Electric deepen their commitment to enhancing safety standards within the mining industry.
