Substances such as lithium, nickel, cobalt and graphite are necessary for future electric motors and wind turbines. Demand for copper, which is needed for new electricity networks, is also expected to increase dramatically.
A report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) concluded that if we are to meet net-zero as a global goal, the demand for these minerals and metals will increase six times by 2050, compared to today's needs.
According to the IEA, recycling will reduce the need for primary minerals by about 10% by 2040. In other words, increased production of minerals and metals will be required over a long period of time.
In other words: to build a sustainable society, we can´t stop mining. But we can speed up the shift towards a more sustainable mining industry. We at Epiroc are driving this change. With us, you can make a difference for the future.
