Prism Core Bit Profile

Exploration diamond drilling will often require the use of directional tools, such as a wedge, to help steer the borehole.

Once the wedge is in the borehole, care needs to be taken with all the down hole tooling, especially the diamond bit, as it can suffer damage to the tip of the crown or worse, drill through the wedge. Our PRISM60 crown profile provides the perfect solution for such situations.

PRISM60 Crown Profile

This specialized bit is the best choice for making the first cut and drilling past wedges already set in the borehole. The Prism60 bit has a smoother 60 degree chamfer on the leading edge of the bit and the inner and outer diameters have been reinforced with diamonds to provide better cutting capabilities.

Instead of the usual “w” pattern, the crown of the wedge bit is flat to provide more matrix and longer life. New and improved waterways also ensure that sufficient water flow reaches the shoulder of the bit to cool it adequately and keep it intact.

  • Optimized waterways for better cooling of the crown at the contact of the wedge blade
  • Improved outer gauge protection
  • Superior angle of attack on the face of the bit for successful drilling past a wedge
  • More reinforcement at the shoulders with carbide strips to maintain gage
  • Comes in a choice of matrices according to ground hardness

Diamond drillers can fall into a routine of using the same equipment over and over. Why not? If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. This is especially true if you are used to drilling in the same region where ground conditions may not vary all that much. However, you may then find yourself drilling in another part of the country, or the world, with conditions that require a different type of equipment.

In order to be able to get good drilling performance, diamond drillers should have a thorough understanding of their drilling equipment. They should be familiar with the individual pieces, their function and how they work together as part of the drilling process. The core barrel plays an important role as this is what you use to recover core. Today, most diamond drillers use wireline core barrels.

In an earlier blog, we looked at the core barrel assembly, this being the equipment that is used to recover core, and plays a very important role in the diamond drilling operation. The success of an operation depends on retrieving core efficiently and effectively. We looked at the parts of the inner tube of which the head assembly is a part. It is a complex part so it is well worth looking at it in detail.
